HOW-TO GUIDES: Responding to an Eviction and Unlawful Detainer

How to respond to an eviction and unlawful detainer

Have you received a Notice to Pay Rent or Quit and have you been served with an Unlawful Detainer? You can defend yourself by filing an Answer.

Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County offers assistance to Tenants. Please leave a message on their housing line (650) 517-8911; someone will return the call.

Bay Area Legal Aid offers tenants a complete Unlawful Detainer Answer Packet with blank forms and instructions on how to fill the forms out.

You can apply for California COVID-19 Rent Relief, called ERAP (Emergency Rental Assistance Program). To start the process go to HousingIsKey. If you receive a Landlord's Eviction Notice, notify your Landlord that you have applied for ERAP with this letter.

The California Courts offers a Self-Help guide for both landlords and tenants for evictions and unlawful detainers.
